About Mystery Train

In the early 70’s, the so-called British rockabilly revival came over to the Netherlands and artists like ”Shakin’ Stevens” and ”Matchbox” brought the rockabilly sound back in the Hit-charts.
Together with some friends, I started organizing rock & roll meetings in and around my hometown, Helmond.
I’ve also played in a couple of bands. As a rhythm guitarist. An interesting experience, was it only to discover that I was a lot better on my place behind my record player.
In the 90’s I’ve made several trips to the U.S. Besides the visits to Memphis, the Sun Studio, Graceland, Tupelo, Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry I’ve met people like Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Lee Riley, Bo Diddley, Charlie Feathers, Sam Phillips and lots of others. One by one great guys who still talked with great love about their music.
Some four years ago, Erwin Schapendonk came up with the idea of making a roots show for Stadsradio Helmond. Erwin (my engineer) is someone with the same passion for the music as I have, so ”Mystery Train” was born.
”Mystery Train” is a trip. A trip to the roots of American popular music, like rockabilly, country, blues, western swing, blue grass, cajun etc. etc.
The meaning of the show is to promote this music and to give the listener information about the music, the labels, the artists and their culture.
And of course there’s the music itself. As they say in Memphis:
”It’s always THE MUSIC that counts”

Begin jaren 70 sloeg de z.g. Engelse rockabilly-revival over naar ons land en artiesten als Shakin’ Stevens en Matchbox brachten de ”rockabilly sound” weer in de hitlijsten. Samen met een paar vrienden begon ik rock & roll avonden te organiseren, eerst in Liessel en daarna in Helmond.
Ik heb ook nog in een paar bandjes gespeeld, als slaggitarist. Dat was een heel interessante periode, al was het alleen maar om erachter te komen, dat ik achter mijn draaitafel toch beter op mijn plaats was.
In de jaren 90 maakte ik diverse Amerika trips en naast bezoekjes aan Memphis, de Sun Studio, Graceland, Tupelo, Nashville, The Grand Ole Opry enz., waren daar de ontmoetingen met mensen als Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Lee Riley, Bo Diddley, Charlie Feathers,  Sam Phillips en nog vele anderen. Stuk voor stuk geweldige mensen, die nog steeds met veel liefde over hun muziek vertelden.
Zo’n dikke vier jaar geleden benaderde Erwin Schapendonk mij met het idee, een rootsprogramma te maken voor Stadsradio Helmond. Erwin, (mijn technieker) is iemand met dezelfde passie voor de muziek als ik, dus ”Mystery Train” was al snel een feit.
”Mystery Train” is een reis. Een reis naar de wortels van de Amerikaanse popmuziek, zoals: rockabilly, country, blues, western swing, blue grass, cajun etc. etc. Het doel van het programma is om deze muziek te promoten en de luisteraar informatie te verschaffen over de  achtergronden van de muziek, de labels, de artiesten, en hun cultuur.   
En dan is daar natuurlijk nog de muziek zelf. Want, zoals ze in Memphis zeggen:
”It’s always THE MUSIC that counts”

What is rock & roll? Where does it come from? When was the start of it? For more than forty years I’ve tried to find an answer on these questions.
At the end of the 50’s, my dad’s sister had a record player and that’s where I first heard the rock & roll-sound from a certain Elvis Presley.
School was a disaster. When the teacher told us about Paris or London, in my mind was in a little studio, somewhere in Memphis.
Elvis was the key. The key to the rockabilly, the country, the blues and the gospel.
It started with collecting records, visiting fanclub-meetings and reading magazines, lots of magazines.

Wat is rock & roll?, Waar komt het vandaan? Wannneer begon het? Vragen waarop ik al zo’n dikke veertig jaar een antwoord probeer te vinden.
Eind jaren 50, had de zus van mijn vader een platenspeler en zo maakte ik voor het eerst kennis met de rock & roll muziek van, vooral, Elvis Presley.
School was een ramp. Als de leraar vertelde over Parijs of Londen, zat ik met m’n gedachten in een kleine studio ergens in Memphis.
Elvis was de sleutel. De sleutel naar de rockabilly, de blues, de country en de gospel.
Het begon natuurlijk met plaatjes verzamelen, fanclubmeetings bezoeken en vooral veel muziekbladen lezen.
